About Fidyah
A day's food for every fast you cannot keep
Fidyah is the compensation for a Ramadan fast that you cannot keep and cannot make up, for example because of old age or a long-term illness. For each missed fast, one person in need is fed for a day.
We cook hot meals in Kenya and hand them out to people in need every Friday. Tell us how many fasts were missed and whose they were, and we read the name out in that week's group video.
- CAD 15 per missed fast, for up to 60 fasts in one order
- Kaffarah for a broken fast: 60 people fed for a day, CAD 900
- Handed out every Friday; group video within 7 days
- Names read as first name and initial; we never film the faces of the people receiving
- Prefer an animal? Goat, sheep or whole cow are available too
وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ
"And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship], a ransom of feeding a poor person."
Quran 2:184

FAQ
Fidyah and Kaffarah questions
How much is Fidyah?
CAD 15 for each missed fast. That feeds one person in need in Kenya for a day, which is what the Quran describes (2:184). A full month of 30 fasts is CAD 450. That is the rate Canadian charities use for 2026,A full month of 30 fasts is USD 330. Many US organizations ask about US$15 a day for 2026; ours is lower because meals cost less in Kenya, and every meal option on this site is priced from the same cost per meal.
Who should pay Fidyah?
Fidyah is for someone who cannot fast and is not expected to be able to make the fasts up later, such as an elderly person or someone with a long-term illness. If you missed fasts for a temporary reason, such as travel, a short illness, pregnancy or nursing, the usual ruling is to make them up instead, and schools differ on when Fidyah also applies. Please ask a scholar about your situation.
What is Kaffarah, and how much is it?
Kaffarah is for a Ramadan fast broken deliberately without a valid excuse. The first duty is to fast 60 days in a row; feeding 60 people is for someone who cannot do that. Ours is CAD 900 (USD 660) for each broken fast, which feeds 60 people in need for a day each. Schools differ on which broken fasts need Kaffarah, so please ask a scholar before you order.
How does the group video work?
All meal orders of the week are handed out together on Friday, and we film it. In the video we read out the names as first name and last initial only, for example Fatima A., because the same video goes to everyone whose meals were given out that week. We film the food and the hands giving it, not the faces of the people receiving it. You receive the link on WhatsApp or by email within 7 days of your order.
Can I give an animal for Fidyah instead?
Yes. You can choose a goat, sheep or whole cow for Fidyah, and all of the meat is distributed to people in need in Kenya with a video of the sacrifice within 24 to 48 hours. Feeding is the usual form of Fidyah, so if you choose an animal, please confirm with a scholar how many fasts it covers for you.
Do you issue tax receipts?
No. Sunnah Slaughter is a business, not a charity registered with the CRA, so we cannot issue a tax receipt and payments are not tax-deductible.not a 501(c)(3) charity, so payments are not tax-deductible. You receive a receipt for your payment and the group video as proof that the meals were given out.
